Story Time: The Ultimate Christmas List

It’s crazy to think that Christmas is only three weeks away and that 2015 is winding down! Anyway, in lieu of the holiday season, I wanted to share a Christmas story that my mom seems to tell just about everyone she runs into this time of year. We’ve all made a Christmas list at one point or another, so I’m sure you will enjoy this one!

I was about six or seven years old, Christmas was quickly approaching and my parents were bracing for the infamous Christmas lists from my brother and I. In preparation my dad challenged my brother and I one afternoon as we were driving through town.

He said, “This year for Christmas I do not want to hear about ever plastic gadget you would like to have or have seen in a magazine or TV. I want you to really think about what you’d like to have.” Fair enough, that’s a good challenge for young kids, and I’m sure they were hoping it would diminish the items like the remote controlled TYCO Motorcycle or a Gameboy with a slew of games of course.

So four or five days later and I approached my dad, having thought long and hard about what I wanted for Christmas. With a look of recognition that he was listening I firmly stated, “I want 25 acres, a horse, a cow and a rope.” That was it, 4 things and not one of them was plastic. I thought it was very well thought out and well my parents… They were impressed, or at least I like to think so, but definitely concerned about the feasibility of the request.

Needless to say in the years since I have acquired several ropes begrudgingly to our family dog and my younger brother, but as for the rest of it, I have yet to see a horse and steer wrapped in bows beside the tree or the deed to a 25-acre property… May this year is the year though!

Wish yall the best this holiday season, safe travels as you visit family and friends and remember the reason for the season! Merry Christmas!
